WHEELING, W.Va., Jan. 4, 2019 -- Sunrise Christian had never been to the Cancer Research Classic prior to drawing an invitation for the 2019 event from Doc Merrick.
The Kansas-based squad did nothing to disappoint during its stay in Wheeling.
Sunrise Christian closed out the first day of the CRC with an impressive, 53-44, victory over defensive-minded Imhotep, which is located in Philadelphia.
Sunrise flexed its muscle in the first half, grabbing an 11-7 lead in the first and owning a 27-16 upper hand at halftime. The lead increased to 13 entering the fourth, causing Imhotep to play in a different mode than it probably would have liked.
Sunrise's ability to get to the foul line was one of the biggest stories of the game. It shot 17-of-23 from the stripe, while Imhotep was just three-of-three. All told, Imhotep was whistled for 17 personal fouls.
With UCLA signee Grant Sherfield leading the way, Sunrise Christian was simply too much. Sherfield finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. No other player cracked double figures, but Noel Coleman and N'faly Dante both had nine. The latter also had seven rebounds.
Imhotep, which lost on Saturday in the finale of the event to McEachern for the second time this season, was led by Dahmir Bishop. The future Xavier Musketeer went for 14 points and five rebounds.
Donta Scott, who is signed to play at Maryland, added a double-double. He went for 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jamil Riggins, who has signed a national letter of intent to Binghamton, added 11 points and nine rebounds.
No other player for Imhotep scored more than two points.
