WHEELING, W.Va., Jan. 4, 2019 -- The opening game of the 2019 Cancer Research Classic was, quite simply, a tale of two halves.
The second half that Moon put forth far outweighed the half that Wheeling Park put forth in the opening 16 minutes. Add that up and it's a 63-50 victory for the Tigers.
The Patriots did basically what they wanted to except extend the lead as much as they would have liked during the first half. Because of Alex Vargo and Keondre’ King's scoring, Park was stake to a 37-31 lead at the break.
The Tigers adjusted on the defensive end and took the game over. They outscored Wheeling Park, 32-13, in the second half. In the third quarter alone, Moon, which is located near Pittsburgh, outscored the Pats, 16-4. Both Park buckets came from Vargo.
In the second half, the biggest adjustment that Moon made was on the offensive end where it make a legitimate effort to get Donovan Johnson involved in the offense.
Johnson, who has countless Division I interest, scored 24 points in the game and grabbed 11 rebounds. He was one of four double-figure scorers for Moon.
Jioni Smith (14), Austin Ryan (10) and Connor Ryan (10) rounded out the double-figure scorers for Moon. Connor Ryan also had eight assists. All told, Moon had 17 assists on 26 made field goals.
Vargo, who many believe greatly enhanced his collegiate stock with his CRC performance, scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He was an impressive 11-of-22 from the field, too.
King, who was held primarily in check during the pivotal second half, scored 16 points. No other Patriot scored more than four and only two other players did that.
