WHEELING, W.Va., Jan. 6, 2018 -- One of the most entertaining games of the weekend saw D.C. Gonzaga and Mater Dei hook up in a heavyweight joust for 32 minutes.
In the end, however, Gonzaga was able to fight off the nationally ranked Mater Dei by a 67-62 count.
Gonzaga led the game by three at halftime and extended it to six, but had to fight off several mini spurts by Mater Dei to keep it at bay to earn the win.
Helping to spark Gonzaga was an impressive shooting performance. It knocked down 27-of-44 shots for the game, including a 7-of-14 effort from 3-point land.
Game MVP honors went to Gonzaga's Myles Dread. He was impressive throughout the contest. The future Penn State Nittany Lion poured in 21 points, grabbed five rebounds and passed out five assists.
Chuck Harris added 14 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Terrance Williams had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Mater Dei, meanwhile, was led by Spencer Freedman's 16 points. Washington commit Reagan Lundeen finished with 10 points, but played only 15 minutes after being forced out of the game due to injury.
Harrison Butler notched 10 points and had five assists.
