Cancer Research Classic
WHEELING, W.Va., Jan. 6, 2018 -- The premier game of the second day of the Cancer Research Classic ended up as a blowout because of just how good Montverde is.
The Florida-based squad, which was a big winner on Friday over Archbishop Wood, received more of a test from La Lumiere in what was a rematch of the 2017 Dicks Sporting Goods National Championship Game.
However, the Eagles were just too much. They led by 12 at halftime thanks to outscoring La Lu, 20-14, in both the first and second quarters. The second half didn't get much better for La Lumiere, which led to the 77-55 final.
The tournament's premier player was Duke signee RJ Barrett. He showed why during both games of the event. Against La Lumiere, he scored 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while never leaving the court.
Barrett, who hails from Canada, led a starting lineup that featured players going to Florida, Gonzaga, Georgia Tech and Maryland.
Andrew Nembhard, who is bound to play for the Gators, earned game MVP honors against La Lumiere with 21 points and four assists. Makhi Mitchell -- the Maryland signee -- added nine, while Georgia Tech-bound Michael Devoe had eight points and four assists.
La Lumiere, meanwhile, finished the CRC with a 1-1 record, but showed some signs that it's not going to quietly as the season continues. Highly coveted point guard Tyger Campbell, who is usually a pass-first player, turned in 18 points. Isaiah Stewart -- a tough guard on the interior -- recorded 13 points and six rebounds.
