Cancer Research Classic
WHEELING, W.Va., Jan. 5, 2018 -- The 11th annual Cancer Research Classic tipped off Friday afternoon with one of the most competitive and defensive battles of the entire weekend.
La Lumiere, which won the national championship in 2017, was able to fight off Imhotep, which is located in Philadelphia, for a 61-51 victory.
The game was a defensive battle as both teams sold out on that end of the floor. However, in the end, the Lakers, who are based in Northwest Indiana, pulled away with a 20-16 fourth quarter.
La Lumiere held Imhotep, which is an underclass dominated roster, to 42 percent shooting from the floor.
On the offensive end, La Lumiere got a solid effort from junior Paxson Wojcik. The son of Wheeling native, Doug Wojcik, Paxson finished with 14 points. He also cashed four-of-five from behind the arc.
Wojcik earned a piece of the MVP honors. He shared it with Isaiah Stewart, who had 21 points and nine rebounds.
Point guard Tyger Campbell, who is an old-school, pass-first guard, passed out seven assists and had only one turnover and never came off the floor. Emanuel Miller went for nine points.
Imhotep was led by 13 points from Donta Scott. Dahmir Bishop finished with 12 and Bernard Lightsey added 11.
