WHEELING, W.Va., Jan. 7, 2017 -- Saturday tipped off with North Allegheny meeting local favorite Wheeling Central Catholic, a yearly entrant to the Cancer Research Classic. The two teams enjoyed an entertaining 1st quarter, which saw seven three-pointers go through the bottom of the net, but eventually North Allegheny’s superior size and length took over and the Tigers were able to pull away for an (84-67) triumph.

Seniors Luke Carter (9 points) and Isaac Barnes (7 points) got the Tigers rolling in the 1st quarter allowing the Pennsylvania-based squad to snatch a 21-15 quarter advantage. Senior guards John Burkhalter and Trey Mueller each scored 5 points for the Maroon Knights.

Juniors Owen Gainer and Brent Price did their best to keep Wheeling CC in the contest combining for 10 points in the 2nd quarter. The teams cashed in four more treys in the period, and the Tigers held a 39-30 advantage at the break.

North Allegheny continued to increase its lead in the 3rd quarter as Barnes (12 points) and talented junior guard Curtis Aiken combined for 20 of the Tigers 22 points to give the victors a 61-47 lead.

Aiken added eight more counters in the 4th quarter and Barnes added two more buckets and a pair of freebies to close out the morning.

For the game, Wheeling Central found some success against the North Allegheny’s zone as Gainer connected on five of Central’s eight three-pointers and Price, a talented slasher, was able to get in the paint and cause some damage with his athletic ability and strength.

In the end, it was too much size and length for the Maroon Knights to handle as the winners out rebounded Wheeling CC by a decisive 48-28 margin. North Allegheny showed great ball movement and converted many inside baskets against the smaller Knights.

Isaac Barnes, the morning’s MVP, scored 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting and corralled 17 rebounds. Aiken finished with 21 points, but was just 6-of-16 from the field. Carter added 12 points and stout senior Griffin Sestili chipped in 10. 6-foot-10 junior center Zach Johnson notched seven points and nine boards.

The Knights were led by Price and Gainer who each scored 19 points with Price adding 10 rebounds. Burkhalter produced 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
