Cancer Research Classic
WHEELING, W.Va., Jan. 7, 2017 -- Few teams, if any, have enjoyed more success than DC Gonzaga over the years at the Cancer Research Classic. The Purple Eagles used a strong 3rd quarter to overcome a four-point halftime deficit to earn an airtight (76-73) win over Westlake (GA).
The Purple Eagles got off to a slow start of sorts falling behind Westlake 23-19 after a quarter as senior guard Daniel Lewis scored 10 points for the Lions. The teams played to a dead heat in the 2nd quarter and Westlake took a 38-34 lead into the locker room.
Coach Steve Turner’s Purple Eagles held a commanding 24-12 advantage in the 3rd quarter allowing Gonzaga to own a 58-50 lead heading into the 4th.
The final period was one of the best of the weekend featuring topnotch play from 5-foot-7 point guard Chris Lykes (Miami signee) and 6-foot-3 junior Prentiss Hubb for the Purple Eagles, while Lykes’ future college teammate Chuma Okeke of Westlake was nothing short of terrific scoring all over the floor and showing his above average skill set for a kid 6-foot-8.
Westlake got exactly what it wanted as time was winding down, but Okeke’s three-point try at the buzzer rimmed out and Gonzaga was able to secure yet another victory at the CRC.
Hubb finished with 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting to earn MVP honors. Lykes tallied 19 points (7-of-21) and a game-high eight assists, while wowing the crowd with his ability to hang in the air and finish at the rim for a kid his size. Junior Myles Dread added 12 points and talented freshman Terrance Williams chipped in 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Okeke totaled game-highs in points (35) and rebounds (17) to lead the Lions in defeat. Lewis finished his night with 21 points.
Stat of the Game:
Gonzaga connected on 8-of-18 three-pointers.
