WHEELING, W.Va., Jan. 2, 2016 -- The marquee matchup saw 3-time defending national champion, Montverde Academy (FL) and its loaded roster, meet one of the nation’s best and storied programs in DeMatha (MD).

Like a big time heavyweight fight, Montverde and DeMatha traded blows in the 1st quarter with the Eagles from Florida holding a slight (17-15) advantage. Washington signee Markelle Fultz, DeMatha’s centerpiece, showed why he is one of the top guards in the country scoring 10 points in the opening quarter.

Montverde Academy increased its lead to (35-29) by halftime with coveted 6-foot-9 senior Bruno Fernando coming off the bench to score nine points and Butler signee Howard Washington chipped in the same. Fultz continued his assault scoring in a variety of ways finishing with 16 points in the opening half.

The lead held steady in the 3rd quarter as talented 6-foot-8 sophomore Simisola Shittu and Fernando helped the Eagles maintain a (51-45) advantage heading into the game’s final eight minutes. Fultz was good for nine more in the period.

DeMatha nearly pulled off the stunner using a strong 4th quarter from talented 6-foot-6 junior guard DJ Harvey, who finally got going, totaling 10 points in the period. Junior guard Ryan Allen added seven and Fultz ended his night with six more.

However, Kevin Boyle’s club was able to hold on thanks to another stellar quarter from Shittu and perhaps the nation’s best freshman Rowan Barrett Jr.

Shittu (21 points/7 rebounds) and Fernando (21 points/12 rebounds) were terrific in victory, while Washington (12 points) and Barrett (10 points) each had their moments throughout the contest.

Fultz, who was outstanding in defeat, finished with a game-high 31 points and added five rebounds for good measure. Harvey tallied 17 points and seven rebounds as top support and Allen ended the game with 12 points. 6-foot-9 junior Josh Carlton had a team-high nine rebounds.

The two teams were just a combined 38-of-62 from the foul line.

Stat of the Game:
Simisola Shittu was 8-of-8 from the field, which helped Montverde shoot 50 percent from the field for the game.
