WHEELING, W.Va., Jan. 4, 2014 -- The Wheeling CC Maroon Knights were just (1-6) in its six previous appearances at the Cancer Research Classic, which included a (0-3) mark against the St. Joe’s Prep Hawks.

Things changed in 2014, as the Maroon Knights were the aggressors and took it to a previously unbeaten Hawks team. Central Catholic trailed (19-18) at halftime, but used an 11-point advantage in the 3rd quarter to seize control of Saturday's opening contest en route to a convincing (58-45) triumph.

The game started off slow with both teams struggling to find the mark in the opening quarter, which resulted in a (9-7) Central Catholic lead. However, St. Joe's Prep was able to get on track in the 2nd quarter behind talented junior Chris Clover and senior Kyle Thompson, who combined for 13 points in the opening half.

Senior Alonzo Manns, an undersized post player, did his best to keep the Maroon Knights afloat with eight 1st half points. Outstanding sophomore Chase Harler and do-it-all senior David Park each tallied five points in the initial 16 minutes, while Park added eight rebounds.

The Knights got things rolling in the 3rd quarter behind seven points apiece from Manns and Harler, which allowed the Wheeling-based school to take a commanding (38-28) lead heading into the final frame.

Clover, a mid-major prospect, did his best to keep the Hawks hanging around with eight points in the period, which included several tough drive-in baskets.

The trio of Manns, Harler, and Park would help seal the victory in the final eight minutes. Harler's one-foot, two-handed dunk, which resulted in an and-one all but, secured victory for the hometown favorite. The play resulted in a St. Joe's timeout and sent the crowd into frenzy.

Clover, once again, was St. Joe's only real offense in the final quarter tallying another eight lightings. The junior finished his day with 23 points and nine rebounds. Senior Kyle Thompson scored 10 points on just 4-of-12 shooting.

Manns, who earned MVP honors, totaled 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting and a 7-of-7 showing at the foul line along with collecting nine boards. Harler added 19 points and Park chipped in 12 points despite 2-of-7 shooting and a game-high 11 rebounds.
